Cosmos Purity (Cosmos bipinnatus Purity) is a beautiful and easy-to-grow variety of cosmos with large, pure white flowers. It is a popular choice for cut flowers and garden borders. Cosmos Purity plants are heat tolerant and drought tolerant, making them a good choice for hot, dry climates.

Soil Preparation

Cosmos Purity prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Choose a planting site that receives full sun for at least six hours per day. Work some organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, into the soil to improve drainage and fertility.

Sowing Seeds

Cosmos Purity seeds can be sown directly outdoors in early spring after the last frost has passed, typically in late April or early May. Alternatively, you can start the seeds indoors four to six weeks before the last frost. For indoor sowing, fill seed trays or individual pots with a sterile seed starting mix. Sow the seeds thinly and cover them with a light dusting of soil. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Place the trays or pots in a warm, sunny location, maintaining a temperature between 70 to 85°F (21 to 29°C). Germination should occur within 7 to 21 days.

Transplanting Seedlings

Once the seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted outdoors. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days to harden them off. Choose a suitable planting site that receives full sun and has well-drained soil. Space the seedlings 12 to 18 inches apart to prevent overcrowding.

Care and Maintenance

Cosmos Purity plants are relatively low-maintenance. They require regular watering, especially during hot, dry periods. However, they are drought tolerant and can withstand periods of dry weather. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Cosmos Purity plants are not heavy feeders, so fertilization is not necessary.

Additional Tips

Cosmos Purity plants may need to be staked as they grow taller.
Pinch out the growing tips of the plants when they are young to promote bushier growth.
Cosmos Purity plants are relatively pest- and disease-resistant.
Harvesting

Cosmos Purity flowers can be harvested when they are fully open. Cut the stems with sharp scissors or pruning shears. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.

Enjoy your beautiful Cosmos Purity flowers!
